Don’t confuse Crystal Stilts with Crystal Antlers or Crystal
Castles. Harkening back to 1980s Manchester while grounded modern day
garage rock, Crystal Stilts is more likely to garner comparisons to
Velvet Underground,Interpol and The Jesus and Mary Chain. Much like the
Clean, Ex-Vivian Girls Frankie Rose’s drumming is front and center on
many tracks. Along with the jangling guitars, she keeps the moody songs
from being swallowed up in the fuzz and reverb of Brad Haggert’s
bedroom vocals. With a genealogy that includes Gang Gang Dance and
Vivian Girls, there’s no lack of indie street cred; luckily, they’ve
got the sound to back it up.These minimal garage-pop gems will demand
that show-goers bring shoes worth a long, thoughtful gaze, but once
they play “Crippled Croon,” those shoegazers will find themselves
dancing despite themselves.
