I really want to know more about the origin of these guys' name.  Pelican is on a huge tour right now, probably for the sole purpose of escaping the weather in their hometown of Chicago.  Unfortunately for them, they're playing Slims (aka one of the lamest venues in the bay area).  But don't be detoured.  They play a sort of artsy gloom and doom metal.  When I first heard them, I thought of Isis, then I found out why.  They are signed to Hydra Head Records, which is run by one of the members of Isis.  Instrumental post-metal may sound a little on the soft side for some metal fans, but album titles like "The Fire In Our Throats Will Beckon the Thaw" and big fat guitars will sooth your blood thirst.
